Several years ago, I had the privilege of delivering a sermon that would ultimately reshape my approach to mentoring. It was a typical evening; a pastor friend invited me to speak at his youth group's weekly service. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this ordinary moment would ignite something extraordinary in me.
The Sermon That Changed EVERYTHING
While preparing for that evening, I stumbled upon a powerful story in the book of Acts, specifically Acts 20:7-12. These six verses have forever influenced how I understand youth mentorship. In the story, Paul is preaching in the city of Troas, and a young man named Eutychus becomes drowsy while listening, eventually falling from a third-story window to his death. Paul immediately stops his preaching, lays his body over Eutychus, and prays over him, bringing him back to life.
This seemingly small biblical moment spoke volumes to me. As I reflected on the story, I realized it was an allegory for the generation I was called to serve. The youth of today, like Eutychus, are often on the edge—disconnected, disengaged, and in need of someone willing to pause, be present, and truly invest in them. In the same way Paul stopped his sermon to bring Eutychus back to life, we must be willing to stop our busy lives and reach out to the young people around us with intention and care.
From Sermon to eBook
This story has become the foundation of my new eBook, It Takes a Village, where I explore how mentorship can bridge social equity gaps, foster meaningful relationships, and create lasting change for today’s youth. Over the past decade, I’ve spent countless hours meditating on these verses and seeing how they reflect the heart of mentorship. To mentor is to go beyond just giving advice—it is to lay down your time, energy, and presence in service of another, just as Paul did with Eutychus.
If you’re passionate about making a difference in your community, if you’re someone who believes in the potential of the next generation, or if you simply want to be part of something bigger than yourself, It Takes a Village is for you. This eBook isn’t just about theoretical concepts but offers practical insights from my years of experience leading youth ministries, nonprofits, and mentoring programs. It is a call to action for every mentor, parent, teacher, and community leader to step up, be present, and breathe life into the young people around us.
